Temporary Residence Permit – A Flexible Solution for a Defined Period
This is the most common type of permit if you plan to stay in Poland longer than your visa or visa-free period allows.
- What is it? A permit granting the right to legally stay in Poland for a specified period, up to a maximum of 3 years.
- For whom? For foreigners who can document the purpose of their stay in Poland, e.g.:
- Work: Including the popular ‘single permit for residence and work’.
- Studies at a Polish university.
- Running a business activity.
- Family reunification (e.g., joining a spouse or child).
- Other important circumstances (e.g., research, internship).
- Benefits: Legal stay, often includes the right to work (depending on the basis), basis for obtaining a Residence Card (Karta pobytu) which (along with a passport) allows travel within the Schengen Area.
- Important: The permit is issued for the duration justified by the purpose of stay (but no longer than 3 years). Before it expires, you must apply for another permit if you wish to continue your legal stay.
Permanent Residence Permit – Stabilization for an Indefinite Period

How to Apply for a Residence Permit? The Process from Your Perspective
Applying for a residence permit requires your personal involvement and submitting an application to the Voivode competent for your place of residence in Poland. Remember, you must submit the application during your legal stay in Poland (e.g., based on a visa, visa-free travel, previous residence card).
The main stages of the process are:
- Choosing the Basis for Application: Identifying the appropriate permit type (temporary/permanent) and the reason for applying (work, studies, family, etc.). Our Law Firm can help you choose the most advantageous option.
- Compiling Documents: Gathering all required documents confirming your identity, purpose of stay, financial means, health insurance, accommodation, photos, and paying the application fee. The list of documents varies depending on the purpose of stay – this is a crucial and often the most challenging stage.
- Submitting the Application: Personally submitting the complete application with attachments at the Voivodeship Office (often requiring a prior appointment booking).
- Fingerprint Collection: Your biometric data will be collected during your visit to the office.
- Waiting for the Decision: The process can take several to several months – depending on the purpose of your stay and the location of the office in Poland. During this time, your stay in Poland is usually legal on the basis of proof, confirming that your application was submitted on time.
- Communication with the Office: The office may request additional documents or clarifications.
- Receiving the Decision: After the proceedings conclude, you will receive an administrative decision.
- Collecting the Residence Card: After receiving a positive decision and paying the card issuance fee, you will be able to collect your Residence Card.
